I have dedicated my career to decreasing health and educational disparities among low income children, through clinical work, education and advocacy. I am a primary care pediatrician at Lurie Children’s Uptown Clinic, an academic community health center, where I also teach Northwestern residents and medical students. I am also Associate Medical Director of the Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities, Medical Director for the Schreiber Center for Early Childhood Health and Wellness, and Associate Chair for Compassion and Wellness Initiatives for Lurie's Department of Pediatrics.  I am a former President of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and Chair of the national AAP Council on Early Childhood. One of my main areas of expertise is literacy promotion in pediatrics. I am the Medical Director of Reach Out and Read (ROR) Illinois, providing technical and financial support as well as education to 190 ROR clinics in the state. I am also in the leadership of National Reach Out and Read, involved in research and curriculum development. My additional areas of interest include health equity, relational health, narrative medicine, physician wellness, youth mentoring, health literacy, monolingual and bilingual language development, and improving links between pediatricians, schools, early childhood centers and parents. I am the author of I Love You Like Sunshine: How Everyday Play and Bedtime Stories Grow Love, Connections and Brainpower, a book for parents and babies, which has been translated into Spanish and has over 250,000 copies in distribution nationally.
